The Fabric
Chelsea crewel is an exuberant botanical fabric. The design is based on popular botanical motifs, including luxuriant pomegranates, flowing vines and the traditional curling leaves.
Whilst the botanical fabric pattern is bold and bright, the colours are muted to suit the colourscape of the English countryside; a range of dusky pinks, delicate brown highlights and a variety of greens taken directly from our native trees in Springtime. All the colours are those you can find in your own garden, which work perfectly with the light we are given – soft, diffuse, gentle. The effect of Chelsea curtains is cheery and natural.
With its large pattern repeat, and generous motifs, Chelsea is a great choice for big curtains in botanical fabric in a space where you want to be bold, but not bright. Chelsea is a classic pattern which doesn’t overshadow everything else in the room.
Chelsea also works beautifully on Roman blinds, with the full pattern revealed with each fold of the fabric. The fruity design makes it a great choice for a timeless kitchen, and we love to see the botanical fabric in a garden room or conservatory. You can use Chelsea for luxurious cushions by selecting your favourite motifs and using them as the focus point of the pattern.
Interiors have long attempted to marry the inside and outside, and botanical fabrics have always played a part in that. Looking through every period of design history, from Ancient Egypt through the Renaissance and Art Deco, floral themes come back every time.
Chelsea crewel curtains, blinds, or soft furnishings are a great way to join the Botanical fabric trend in a timeless way, with fabric that won’t go out of fashion in five years time, but will endure as an heirloom.
Interior designers often specify Chelsea for a scheme when they want to bring some pattern and texture, but remain true to the soft and gentle palette of an English Country House.
If you are set on a botanical fabric but you are looking for a simpler palette, why not review our Chenab crewel, for a botanical fabric design in shades of green and cream, perfect for a simple and striking colour scheme.
